Most people use the term ‘talent’ and ‘skill’ interchangeably as they think one can be successful with either of them. However, this is a common misunderstanding. It is important to understand the difference between talent and skill terms. By knowing this, one can realize what type of ability he/she has. And also what effort he needs to put the to improve it.
Talent is the inborn ability of a person. It remains undiscovered. Many people even think that they have no expertise at all. That is why innate ability needs to be recognized. It is something that one can do extraordinarily without putting much effort, and the people around them may wonder how they have done it so beautifully, yet so quickly. Your natural aptitude may not be from the educational field. It can be dancing, cooking, creating sculpture, acting, athletics, swimming- anything. Unfortunately, most of our inborn ability remains hidden and unrecognized due to the lack of proper guidance.
Skill is also an ability, but it acquired through systematic learning, practice, or experience. Any person can obtain skills through hard work and developed with time through practice. The more you will work hard with commitment, the more efficiently you will get an ability.
Difference Between Skill And Talent
Talent is one’s inborn ability; hence, it does not need any effort to grow it. On the other hand, to develop a skill, one needs to work hard and give time to it.
- Every single person cannot have a unique inborn ability; it is uniquely gifted to some people only. On the other hand, anyone can acquire skills if he/she has the capability and commitment.
- In most cases, natural aptitude remains hidden and undiscovered. However, one can easily recognize his or her skills as the person has put conscious efforts to learn it.
So Which One Is More Important?
It is not easy to say which one is more important between natural aptitude and skill. However, it can be stated that we may admire the ability, but we pay for the craft. For example, many people have a melodious voice it is their talent. When they sing a line or two, we can admire their view. But just with this inborn ability, that person cannot become a singer overnight, who can rock the stage with excellent performance. On the other hand, if someone has a sweet-voice, but he/she is committed to singing and practices a lot, that person will eventually gain the ability to give an excellent performance. So even if you have a talent, you will need to sharpen it with your skills.
Once talent discovered, he or she can make it profitable by valuing it and by showing it to the people free. When he or she becomes confident enough to give it a kick start as your career. If you want to maximize your skill and earn from it, you require a lot of commitment and hard work to develop it.
